We in Upstate NY are especially excited to see beautiful Spring like weather here! Spring IS here!
The month of May also marks our Lilac Festival here. It generally is a two week event, showcasing the bountiful Lilac’s that grow in our beautiful Highland Park in Rochester, NY. Just imagine walking through a park with all of that heady scent of lilacs…..Mmmmm so very lovely indeed!
With the forthcoming of Easter, in just a few weeks away, the gardeners are getting their gear ready to plant their selections of beautiful annuals and perennials. What are your favorite plants to put around and in your environment?
For shade plantings, I have loved New Guinea Impatients, in colors of white and a hot pink and the Sweet Potato Vine in a lovely chartreuse color. I also love white Lobelia’s but they prefer full sun. Another sun loving plant is the Zinnia. I was just given some Zinnia seeds, from my daughter and son-in-law and look forward to spreading them in the beds as well. If you do the same, I was told to top them with soil that is only a half inch thick covering; and then give a good dose of water. Zinnia’s are sun loving, so make sure your placement favors good sunlight. If you prefer to plant the actual plant they generally are available in our region in June from our local nursery and garden centers.
This posting is short and long over due, please accept my apologies for those reasons. I must get to our garden store today to start the quest for new and exciting selections to add to my favorites that I listed above.
Happy planting everyone and Happy Spring!!
